What to expect for your in home Newborn Session

What to expect for your in home newborn session

Introduction

I love newborn photography, and I have a lot of happy families that come back to me over and over again. If you're considering booking your in home newborn session with me, it's important that you know what to expect from the entire process. This article will cover everything from general timing and logistics to what happens when I arrive at your home with all of my equipment (I promise it's not scary!).

What Happens?

I know that you are excited to have your baby's first photos taken, and I am so excited to be there with you! Your newborn session will be relaxed and fun, but also well-planned and organised.

I will take photos of your baby during the session. If they are awake and happy, great! If they aren't feeling like themselves or want some quiet time, I will work with them on their schedule as best we can (and probably get some amazing shots while they sleep). You should feel free to use anything else along that makes them comfortable: blankets, stuffed animals etc...Blankets can be great especially if you've got one that has been knitted by grandma and may have been passed down in the generations.

I'll also take lots of photos of you holding or cuddling with them--skin-on-skin cuddles are wonderful memories that last a lifetime!

You can also have siblings in the session. Grandparents and your family pets. I usually start with the whole family and then start doing breakdowns. Especially when it comes to kids so that they don't get fed up too quickly and can then chill out.

Feeding the baby before I arrive is a good idea to help them sleep better.

I recommend feeding the baby before I arrive. This will help them sleep better and longer during your session, which means you get more of their sweet faces on camera! If you are unable to do this, or if they just don't want to eat until I get there, don't worry--we can stop at any point for you to feed baby. There is no rush!

The session will be completely candid, except for photos of you holding the baby, or doing skin-on-skin cuddles.

Don't worry about posing. The newborns are too young to know that they are being photographed, so there's no need to stand in any particular way and look pretty! If your baby is awake during the shoot (which can happen), I'll work with them as they move around on their own terms and follow their lead as they want to be held/cuddled/etc... You don't have to worry about whether or not they're sleeping either--they may sleep through part of it or not at all; either way is fine by me! We will get plenty of images with open eyes and smiles so don't stress out over this too much either...the most important thing is just enjoying this special time together as a family.

I use natural light during newborn sessions at home.

I use natural light during newborn sessions at home. Natural light is best for newborn photography, as it's more flattering for both babies and adults. It also gives your photos an organic feel that can't be replicated with artificial lighting. I love natural light photography because it allows me to capture moments as they happen rather than trying to pose them according to my vision of how the image should look like in my head!

A newborn photography session may come as a surprise to many parents but it can be fun!

A newborn photography session may come as a surprise to many parents but it can be fun! It's an opportunity for you and your baby to spend quality time together, bond with each other, and get to know each other better. The best part? You'll get some amazing photos that capture the very beginning of your family history in such a special way.

If you're still on the fence about whether or not this type of photo shoot is right for you, here are some things we think all parents should know before booking their first session:

What to expect for your in home newborn session

  • What to wear: You'll want to wear something that's comfortable and easy to move in, but you don't want it too casual. If you're going for the "mom and dad look," jeans and t-shirts are great! If not, try a cute maxi dress or skirt-it will look great in photos and makes posing easier because there isn't much fabric flying around. For your baby a cute little outfit or a white baby grow is perfect. I will also bring my newborn wraps so we can wrap them up like a little baby cocoon.

  • How do I prepare my baby? Babies need their naps during this time period so make sure they get plenty of rest beforehand (Although we all know this isn't always so easy). Also keep them fed, changed and warm by dressing them accordingly for temperature outside (if needed). Having siblings in the session too? I recommend bringing along any toys or snacks you think might help keep the little one entertained during our session together.

  • What can I expect during my photo shoot? Your session will last anywhere between 45 minutes - 2 hours depending on how many outfits change out there are as well as how much time we need between each set up before moving onto another pose/location within your home environment! I always follow the babies lead as I want them comfortable and happy.

  • The session will be in your home, during the day (morning is usually best), between when they are born up to 4 weeks old. Ideally the sooner the better as they will be more sleepy and less likely to ninja their way out of any wraps.

How Should I set up my home?

I would suggest that you set up your home in a way that will allow us to move around easily and get the best shots possible. I will bring my large posing beanbag and blankets if you wish. Otherwise having your living space tidy and maybe even get some flowers in.

Conclusion

I hope this blog post has answered some of your questions about in home newborn photography. I know it can be a little scary to have strangers in your home and taking pictures of your baby, but I promise that I will make everything as comfortable for you as possible!
